Youngsters at The Whartons School enjoyed the spellbinding tale of Charlotte's Web this week.

All of the 213 pupils at the school saw the Scottish-based M and M theatre company perform the E B White story in Otley on Tuesday.

The popular children's story is about an affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur who befriends a spider named Charlotte.

Charlotte lives in the rafters above Wilbur's pen.

When Wilbur finds out what happens to pigs when they grow fat, Charlotte spins a web that says Some Pig, convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved.

Head teacher James Vincent said that the event had gone down very well with the pupils and that the exercise had proved worthwhile.

He added: "The children all loved it and the story has humour and it is a great tale.

"The theatre company has visited us before, but it usually performs pantomimes around Christmas," he told the Wharfedale and Airedale Observer.
