Leek Town 1, Guiseley 0

Guiseley signed off their season with a dismal performance at Leek Town on Saturday and left manager Neil Parsley vowing to find at least four new players.

He knows after two successive poor starts to a season that he needs a good start next time out. He has positions in every department of his team that need filling and he has been casting his eye around for suitable replacements.

In a lack lustre performance Guiseley's ageing full-backs Peter Atkinson and Clive Freeman found it a struggle against lively opponents but they were not the only ones as Guiseley struggled to make an impact on the game.

They were lightweight up front and for all David Cooke's running and Dave Henry's ingenuity they missed the out of favour Alex Nesovic and Alan Bailey, who broke a couple of ribs in the Farsley Celtic game.

With Richard Chattoe also on the sidelines after suffering a bad head injury against Farsley Celtic they lacked bite in midfield.

Guiseley were made to defend for much of the first-half after Martin Ridley had driven a free-kick just over John Lamb's bar in the opening minute.

Leek had appeals for a penalty turned down when James Nettleton appeared to handle the ball but the referee waved play on.

Leek's pressure paid off in the 30th minute when Dave Whittaker provided the finishing touch to the best move of the game. It gave him his 25th goal of the season and eventually his side their first ever home win over Guiseley.

Leek strung five neat passes together before Adam Martin played the ball to Whittaker who blasted the ball into Lamb's goal.

Guiseley stepped up their game in the second-half but failed to penetrate a resolute Leek defence.

They did go close however in the 50th minute when David Cooke forced his way into the penalty area and got a shot in but Steve Hodgson made the save.

Six minutes later Guiseley won their first corner of the game and when Gary Sucharewycz headed the ball out to the edge of the area Nathan Hay drove his effort over the bar.

In the latter stages of the season Guiseley have given outings to some of their promising young reserve team players such as striker Bruce Hogg and centre-back Danny Bowmar, both still schoolboys.

With the loss of Ryan Senior, firstly through injury and more latterly due to his training to become a police officer, Guiseley have struggled up front.

The combative Ben Thackwray has been missing from the midfield for most of the season due to a knee injury and all in all Guiseley have mainly flattered to deceive.

They have strung good runs together and then thrown it all away. They had an excellent FA Cup run culminating in the first round proper defeat at Luton Town but other than that their league form has been either superb or distinctly poor.

They have lacked the consistency needed to reach the heights of Division One and a possible return to the UniBond Premier Division.

Farsley Celtic Res 1, Guiseley Reserves 2

Guiseley Reserves have had a string of fixtures over the closing weeks of the season. They notched only their third win of the campaign at Farsley Celtic on Friday when out of favour first team striker Alex Nesovic played a starring role.

He held the young team together, scored the first goal, made numerous defensive headers and all in all gave a superb performance. Guiseley's other goal came from young Scott Cater.

Burscough 7, Guiseley Reserves 0

The Reserves then travelled to Burscough on Monday and found themselves facing the full Burscough first team as they prepare for the FA Trophy final against Tamworth - a side Guiseley know all about having beaten them in the FA Cup this season.

When Guiseley played Burscough Reserves earlier in the season they defeated them 5-3.

Guiseley played some excellent football and were unlucky to be 2-0 down at the break making two defensive errors. Midfielder Andy Shuttlewortth had one of his best games in a Guiseley shirt and was running the show but when he sustained a knee injury and left the field just before half-time Guiseley fell apart.

Burscough netted five more goals to run out 7-0 winners in the end which was rough justice on the young Guiseley team.

The Reserves were due to play at Bradford Park Avenue on Wednesday night.

They then have just one Lancashire League game remaining at Chester City on a date to be arranged.

Two former Guiseley Guiseley players are involved in the Conference League play-offs, Lee Elam with Morecambe and Jason Blunt with Doncaster Rovers.
