An 'ap-peal' is being made for volunteers to be the first people to ring Saltaire's new bells.

It is hoped the £30,000 project to install six bells in the United Reformed Church at the World Heritage Site village will be completed by Septem-ber in time for the 150th anniversary of the founding of the village.

And a group of bell ringers is already being formed in preparation for the big event.

The original bells, installed by Sir Titus Salt, were last rung in the 19th century before fears grew that the church structure was unable to hold them.

They were removed in the Second World War munitions crisis and a CD recording of bells is now played from the church tower.

There will be an open morning at the church tower on Saturday at 10am so anyone interested in the bells can have a look before the work begins.

To join the bell ringers, previous experience is not necessary as training will be provided at other church towers nearby.

Rehearsals will begin soon for the September performance.

Robert Appleby, who will be training the bell ringing group, said: "Anyone is welcome to join in and bell ringers do not need to be a member of the church congregation." Anyone willing to volunteer should contact Mr Appleby between 7pm and 8pm on 07966 234849.

The cost of the bells has been underwritten by Maggie Silver, widow of Jonathan Silver, who died six years ago, in commemoration of her husband. Mr Silver is credited with transforming the derelict Salt's Mill into a gallery and arts centre.

The bells are to be cast in Holland and it is hoped they will be heard for the first time on September 20.

The fund to restore the bells currently stands at £2,000, donated by individuals and businesses who are sponsoring the event.
