AT the National Junior Athletics League (Pennine Division) Match 1 at Mansfield there were several outstanding performances from local under-17 age group athletes.

Contesting the league, which is for athletes from the under-20 age group, but in which under-17s may also compete, were teams from Leeds City AC, Bingley Harriers, Spenborough AC, Rotherham Harriers, Chesterfield AC and Mansfield Harriers.

Multi-eventing for the victorious Leeds City AC team, Horsforth's Andrew Staniland (16) was in tremendous form with a trio of individual victories. The long jump was the meeting's first event and Andrew produced a magnificent personal best of 6.90m.

As this is an AAA under-20 grade 1 national standard performance, he was subsequently awarded the medal for the male athlete of the match.

Andrew went on to win the javelin (800g) with a new personal best with this weight implement of 46.96m. He then contested the high jump, leading the field with an outdoor PB of 1.90m. Finally, he ran the first leg for the first placed Leeds City 4 x 400m relay team (3 mins.34.5s).

Further valuable points were gained for Leeds by Menston athlete Richard Ettenfield (16). A personal best of 3.25m saw him win the pole vault and only an event clash with the 110m hurdles prevented him from going higher. In this latter event, Richard finished fourth and he was also third in the shot (6.25kg) with a putt of 9.49m.

He too ran in a relay, producing an impressive third leg of the 4 x 100m for another Leeds victory.

For the girls, Bethany Staniland (14) made her league debut for her new club, Leeds City AC, and duly set a personal best of 33.64m for second place in the javelin (600g). She was third in the 800m in 2 mins.31.1s, a performance which additionally gave her 'B' string victory. She was also fifth in the long jump with a season's best 4.91m and ran the first leg for the third placed Leeds' 4 x 100m relay team.

In the female long jump, there was a fine leap from Rawdon athlete Amy Howard (16). The Skyrac AC athlete was competing for Bingley Harriers in a second claim capacity and 5.05m saw her achieve fourth place in the long jump and she was also fourth in the shot (4kg) with a putt of 8.91m.

However, she saved her most impressive performance for last and a season's best throw of 34.54m gave Amy second place in the discus (1kg). She also ran a gritty leg for the second placed Bingley 4 x 400m quartet.

The previous day, Bethany Staniland had also seen action at the City of Sheffield's Festival of Athletics at the Don Valley Stadium. Here the Horsforth athlete won the Under-17 women's shot (4kg) with a pleasing putt of 9.85m and then took the same age group's long jump with 4.76m.

Ilkley Harriers

At Saturday's Coniston Fell Race, nine miles with 3500 ft of climb, Ilkley Harrier Alison Weston was 80th overall and third lady in 1h37:40. Nicky Kime ran about 1h45.

Nick Pearce travelled further afield for the Stuc a Chroin Fell Race, a British Fell Championships counter over 15 miles with 1250 ft of climb. Nick was seventh Vet 50 in 2h39, not far behind Andrea Priestley who was second lady in 2h37.

The next day, at the West Nab Fell Race, which was raising funds for the John Taylor Foundation for Young Athletes, Morgan Williams was 51st in 59:34 over the 6.25 miles with 2042 ft of climb. Second-claim Harrier Kirstin Bailey of Bingley Harriers was fourth lady in 54:27.

Jack Bloor Fell Races

THE annual Jack Bloor Fell Races will take place on Ilkley Moor on Tuesday, May 13.

The senior race will set off at 7.15 pm followed at 7.20 pm by the juniors.

The event is sponsored by the Complete Runner and will start at the Millennium Gardens.

Entries will be taken on the day and the registration fee is £3 for seniors and £1 for juniors.

There will be both individual and team prizes.

The race will take in the Badger Stone, the Swastika Stone, Cowpers Cross and the Ruin at Gill Head.

The men's record for the race is held by Yeadon's Greg Hull in 39.03 while the women's record is held by Lucy Wright with 45.57.

Junior races will be held for the 6-9 years, 10-13 years and 14-16 years age groups.

Otley Ten Mile Road Race

THE Otley Athletic Club staged Otley Ten Mile Road Race will take place on Wednesday, June 25.

The event incorporates the North East Region Police Championships and the Yorkshire men's, women's and veterans championships.

The race will start at 7.30 pm from Otley Rugby Union Club in CRoss Green.
