Over 50 members of local orienteering club Airienteers competed at one of Britain's premier events in Berkshire.

The event, which is held over three days, drew competitors from all over Europe including Norway, Sweden, Germany and Ireland so the competition was tough.

George Stevens from Addingham, aged 12, (pictured above with his trophy) ran superbly in both the Individual Competitions to claim first

prize in his age group.

Other winners included Florence Haines, aged 10, from Ilkley, and Alistair Wood (M50), from Addingham.

Wharfedale is a hot-bed for some very good orienteers and the following Airienteer members also performed creditably:

M14 Jack Wood (3rd), Hector Haines (9th); M16 Joe Mercer (4th); M20 Matthew Burden (3rd); M40 Steve Webb (8th), David Cheeswright (11th); W14 Victoria Stevens (2nd), Katie Wood (6th); W18 Rose Burden (10th); W20 Becky Carlyle (7th).

Airienteers have one of the strongest Junior sections in the country many of whom are now in regional and national squads benefitting from Sport England funding, all of which bodes well for the future of the club.

The final day was reserved for Relays where Rose Burden, Lizzie Van Hee and Victoria Stevens beat 15 other clubs to win the women's under-17 competition.

Also doing well were the under-17 boys team of Ben Stevens, Jack Wood, and George Stevens who were third.

The next Airienteers event is at Penistone Hill, near Howarth on June 15 but there are also local informal events in Wednesday evenings throughout the summer - an ideal way to get started with orienteering.

Details of both can be found on the club's web-site at www.aire.org.uk or by ringing Frank Kew, the Publicity Officer on 01943 430115.
