CARERS of adults with learning difficulties concerned about the possible move from the Snaygill Centre to Navigation House, Skipton, have Craven district councillors on side.
The county council's social services department has run a day service for people with learning disabilities from the Snaygill Centre for many years.
But it announced recently that it wished to close the Snaygill Centre and open a new smaller satellite centre at Navigation House.
A spokesman said that the group did not need a large base and having various satellite centres throughout the district would create better flexibility and more choice for the users.
Carers disagreed and said that Navigation House was a dangerous site.
They disliked the fact that it was on a main road and next to the canal, had little space to sit outside, and was too small to take the whole group at the same time.
The carers approached Craven District Council for help.
Members offered to look at the proposals through its overview and scrutiny committee with a view to making representations to North Yorkshire County Council on their behalf.
Now Craven councillors will be asked to approve a recommendation at its annual meeting on May 22 to seek an undertaking from the county council that it would not implement any of the proposed changes relating to the use of Navigation House until there had been a full and proper consultation on the matter and it has been through the overview and scrutiny process.
o Police are investigating two break-ins at the Snaygill Centre this week. Nothing was stolen during the first incident, which was reported on Sunday afternoon, but kitchen items were taken during the second burglary, reported on Tuesday.
