Thornhill 4

Albion secured promotion to the Premier flight of the Pennine League on Tuesday with a powerful display against Thornhill.

Thornhill opened the scoring with a penalty before Andy Parker Craig Livock and Ben Farrar combined to send Simon Marsden over for an unconverted try to take the lead briefly before Thornhill added another penalty to tie the scores.

Albion continued to put the pressure on the Dewsbury side with some great defence from the forwards of Ian Spencer, Steve Wrench, Farrar and Jimmy Feather before they broke out on attack and Livock was involved again when he sent Wrench clear to score a great individual try. Dean Brookes added the goal.

Albion increased their lead further when a good break from Marsden was capitalised on when Jimmy Feather chipped through for Wayne Smith to touchdown. Brookes added the extras to give Albion with a 16-4 lead at the break.

Andy Broughton and Wayne Smith put some big hits in on the Thornhill players, but the game became deadlocked until, midway through the second half, Brookes added a drop goal.

Haughey knocked off four would be tacklers to go over and score a fine try. Brookes couldn't add the goal but on the stroke of full time he added a penalty to seal the win.

Wrench as always was outstanding along with Jimmy Feather Spencer and Wayne Smith. The final game of the season is this Saturday when the team travel to Clayton in the league, kick off 2.30

Cowling Harlequin 40

Harlequin romped to a final league win at Fartown on Saturday to end their first season a creditable fifth place, just one point behind Clayton. A.

The ebullient Jimmy Anson started the surge with a try after five minutes rapidly followed by Ben Emmott for the second. Darren Greenwood goaled twice. Adrian Greaves scored a superb individual try for Saints midway through the first half. It was answered immediately by Anson's second. Greenwood failed to goal but Cowling went in to the break with a 16-4 lead.

It took a 14 minutes for the first score after the restart despite two disallowed tries by coach Johnny Sharkey for Cowling. Darren Greenwood intercepted a pass on Cowling's 10-yard line to race the length of the pitch to score - and celebrate - between the sticks. He duly converted his own try.

St. Joseph kicked off and Ben Clements caught the ball and raced the full length of the pitch to score again under the sticks. Darren goaled again and again Joseph's again kicked off. This time Rob McAndrew who burst his way through five defenders to put Pete Crangle in for a superb try.

Another goal followed for Greenwood and it was the turn for Adrian Greaves to give some credibility back to St. Josephs as he again scored a good individual try.

With the clock ticking down it was the powerful prop Ben Emmot who ended the day by taking several defenders with him over the line for his second and Cowling's seventh try.

Darren Greenwood's total of six goals and a try earned him the man of the match award.

Presentation and end of the season celebration are to be held at the Bay Horse, Cowling on Saturday May 10.

Keighley Town 22

Crigglestone 18

Town fought off relegation with a thrilling two-point victory over Crigglestone thanks to some committed rugby.

Scrum half Neil Kennedy started and finished a slick move with Alan Muff to score their first try. Kennedy followed up by kicking two tries. Late in the half a delicate kick through by Stokes caused havoc and eventually winger Billy Mackay stepped over the line with Kennedy adding the conversion to give town a 14-6 lead.

They kept up the pressure with another score five minutes into the second period. Daz McNulty outwitted the defence with a dummy pass which gave him space to squeeze over. Kennedy added the difficult touchline kick to put them 20-6 ahead., he also kicked another penalty to give his side a comfortable 22-6 lead.

Criggleston hit back with a converted try from dummy half and late in the game they hoisted a high ball when was fumbled allowing their winger to score. The conversion made it 22-18, but the final hooter ensured Town's survival in Division One.
