The 2,200 threatened redundancies at Thorn Consumer Electronics coupled with the 335 jobs to be lost at the Lucas Aerospace plant, meant that Bradford was now a city "on the brink" a public meeting was told last night. Prof. Hilary Rose, of the Applied Social Studies Department of Bradford University, told a meeting in the Textile Hall, Westgate, that the lost Thorn jobs alone would cost £7m a year in unemployment benefits and other payments.

One of Bradford's cross city bus services, which the City Council agreed to try for 12 months, is expected to start on June 7. The route concerned is from Moore Avenue via Great Horton Road across to Fagley or Wrose, and includes an alteration to the city terminus. Mr C. T. Humpidge, general manager of Bradford Corporation Transport Dept, said today that the Traffic Commissioner had agreed to the cross city buses, and would be putting his decision in writing.
