A BBC film crew plans to visit this year's Keighley Gala to shoot scenes for a documentary.

It follows the discovery of discarded footage depicting various galas at the turn of the last century, including the Keighley event in 1904.

Now the current gala organisers are urging historic organisations which might have been represented at the 1904 celebration to get involved in this year's event on June 7. Chairman Brian Hudson said: "This old film was found in a skip, but the quality of it is very good.

"It would have been commissioned by the fairground people of that time and shown in booths.

"The footage apparently features a lot of galas, but many of them have disappeared over the years.

"The gala has survived more or less in its original form, and we would like to get as many organisations as possible - that may have been involved 100 or so years ago - to take part this year."

Other groups or individuals interested in taking part in next month's gala - as part of the procession, providing entertainment or simply helping out on the day - are also being sought.

The gala will include the usual fun fair, stalls and fireworks finale.

A new feature this year is a balloon release, which it is hoped will raise £1,000.

Entry to the Victoria Park venue will be free and it is hoped that proceeds from the balloon event will help offset the funds no longer raised through admission charges.
