Robert Wolleaston is poised to become Nicky Law's first capture of the summer.

As first revealed in the Telegraph & Argus, City boss Law is keen to bring in the attack-minded midfielder, who caught the eye in two reserve appearances last month.

The club today confirmed that talks with 23-year-old Wolleaston, whose contract at Chelsea runs out at the end of June, are progressing well.

Managing director Shaun Harvey said: "Discussions have started and are at an advanced stage. Robert is still under contract at Chelsea at this moment in time but we are trying to conclude a deal very quickly.

"Nicky rates him highly and we think he has got every chance of becoming a good player for us."

Wolleaston's experience has been strictly limited during five years at Stamford Bridge. He played only one Premiership game in December 1999.

His last action was on loan with Northampton in the 2001-2002 campaign and he has also had temporary spells at Bristol Rovers and Portsmouth.

Chelsea gave Wolleaston plenty of notice that they would not be renewing his contract to give him a head start for finding another club.

He played for City's reserves against West Brom and Newcastle, scoring in the second game with a header.

Meanwhile, Frazer McHugh has agreed a new one-year contract.

The former Swindon midfielder, 21, has been on a short-term deal since deadline day after signing from non-league Halesowen Town.

McHugh, who played under Law on loan for Chesterfield, made his debut at Gillingham on Easter Monday. He also started City's game against Preston but was substituted at half-time.

Harvey said: "He's a player who has shown good potential. We are hoping that he can push on next season and keep developing in the First Division."

Law is determined to bring down the average age of the senior squad while considerably reducing the size of the wage bill.
