Otley 19,Driffield 18: The silverware travelled home to Cross Green on Thursday following an exciting Yorkshire Colts Cup Final staged at Hull Ionians.
Otley had the advantage of a slight slope in the first-half and started well errors costing Driffield penalties in the first few minutes. A long range effort from the ten metre line just went wide but shortly after a further penalty gave a good line-out field position.
Otley produced a text book catch and drive for Collum Hanogue to open the scoring. Alex Thompson added the extras from the touch line. It was all Otley now and winger Freeman kicked ahead and was unlucky not to touch down in the wide in goal area. A minute later determined skipper Chris Thornton made sure he was on the scoresheet with a break from the back of the scrum. Alex Thompson converted with an excellent kick.
Driffield fought back hard for the remainder of the half with some penetrating runs. The Otley defence was up to the job however, which has been a feature of the game throughout the cup campaign.
Alex Laycock was deemed to have obstructed early release of the ball, even though he couldn't roll away. The penalty awarded under the posts brought the half-time score to 14-3.
There was calm resolve about what had to be done in the second-half. Perhaps too calm as Driffield came off the ropes with determination and within a minute of the re-start had put their centre away for a converted score under the posts.
Continued pressure on the Otley line followed for the next 20 minutes. After a series of advantages Driffield produced a further score left of the posts not converted. At 15-14 down the game had changed for Otley. This went from bad to worse when a further penalty was awarded for off-side. This took Driffield four points ahead.
Fresh legs were called for and Dave Leatham came on for Kyle Sutcliffe in the second row, Tom Henry for flanker Collum Hanogue, Toby Henry for scrum-half Tom Boyle and James Jackson for flanker Andy Crawford.
This re-awakened the Otley attack who began to patiently assert pressure, despite nerves from the touchline. And, with ten minutes to play James Jackson bulldozed forward from a scrum, prop Ben Fear was in support and the Driffield defence was sucked in. The ball went down the line supported by full-back Sam Scaife and with the wing running out of room, centre Simon Care came up in support to receive the inside pass and crash over for Otley to regain the lead.
This set up an exciting finish with Driffield throwing everything at Otley. There were even more nervous moments as a drop goal attempt just went wide and the clearances were put under pressure.
The final substitutions brought on Chris Tinker and Steve Maggipinto for winger Tim Rushfirth and full-back Sam Scaife. Otley took control for the final minutes inching the ball up the touchline until the whistle.
