City's centenary match between their modern-day promotion heroes may not be resurrected.
The club called off this weekend's game between the 1996 and 1999 glory teams because so many players could not make it.
Chairman Gordon Gibb hoped to rearrange it for later in the summer. But now it seems that has been ruled out.
Managing director Shaun Harvey admitted: "I think it's highly unlikely that a centenary fixture in that format will be possible to stage. A number of the players we would want to appear in it will be in pre-season training.
"While clubs have been very good to release players at this time of the year, I would not expect them to do it again in pre-season. We would certainly be reluctant to do the same at that stage and release our players for what is effectively a charity game.
"But hopefully we would look to still do something with those who aren't playing anymore and perhaps mix and match a bit."
The former stars could be involved during the weekend of July 26-27 when Valley Parade hosts a four-team centenary tournament. The ex-Bantams may be lined up to provide the entertainment in between matches.
Manchester United right back Lee Roche is a City target. The 22-year-old played twice last season against Newcastle and Deportivo.
City have added trips to Farsley Celtic (July 29) and Altrincham (August 5) to their friendlies schedule and expect to confirm the Scotland trip by the end of the week.
