Relatives of a Keighley barber who went missing 12 years ago are being invited to claim his estate.

Bachelor Malcolm Berry has not been seen since he disappeared, aged 56, in August 1991, when he was rumoured to be in Spain. Now, more than a decade after his mysterious disappearance, he has been declared dead.

But detectives in Keighley say the case will remain open and they are still seeking information about him.

Mr Berry's lawyers, Turner & Wall of Keighley, are seeking people who may have claims against his estate, under the Trustee Act 1925.

Mr Berry was in business as a barber in a small terraced property in Drill Street, Keighley, and had a flat above the shop.

He had run the business for about 12 years before his disappearance and was known to go on extended holidays.

It is understood he owned a number of properties in Keighley and had about £150,000 in his bank account.

He left a note pinned to the shop door, below the traditional candy-striped barber's pole, saying he would be back on August 27. The shop is now boarded up and the barber's pole has been removed.

Keighley police launched a hunt for Mr Berry after searching his shop for clues, but his whereabouts remained a mystery and there has never been a trace of him since.

Detective Inspector Trevor Gasson said: "We are still wanting information about Mr Berry's movements and activities and any other information we can act upon.

"The file will be reopened periodically and reviewed by a senior officer."

A Turner & Wall spokesman said people who believed they had a claim against his estate must contact them on or before July 30 this year by ringing 01535 607831.

Mr Berry has been officially declared dead by the Probate Registry. The official date of his death has been registered as August 10, 1991.
