Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's an award-winning dress, designed by a Bradford fashion student. Stylish women will soon be able to buy the garment, which was inspired by an aeroplane and designed by Anthony Noll.

The 24-year-old student at the Royal College of Art in London has won a competition organised by fashion chain Miss Selfridge.

His dress is now set to be mass-produced and will be on sale by the summer.

Anthony, who grew up in Thornton, is in the first year of a masters degree in fashion womenswear and knitwear.

Students on his course were invited to take part in the contest through a new partnership between Miss Selfridge and the college.

A Miss Selfridge spokesman said they asked students to design an outfit based on the theme "global traveller".

Judges chose ten designs which the creators made up into garments and from them, Anthony was picked as the winner, scooping a £1,000 prize.

He has also been offered a one-year paid work placement as a designer for Miss Selfridge, which he will begin this summer and finish when his two-year course ends.

Anthony said he was thrilled. "It's really cool but it's a really high standard at the college so I was a bit shocked.

"But it's very nice to get some recognition."

The former Thornton Grammar School pupil said he had been inspired by the shape of an aeroplane. "The dress has got wings and an aerodynamic shape."

The knitted dress is yellow and cream and tapered at the bottom.

Anthony said he was looking forward to his placement as it would mean working in a different way to what he was used to. "It's a really good way to get into the industry."

Sim Scavazza, Miss Selfridge brand director, said they chose Anthony's design because it epitomised the brand.

"It's edgy and topical but feminine. It's unique, exclusive and full of life.

"We can't wait to get the piece into stores."

A spokesman for the Royal College of Art said: "The project created a lot of enthusiasm with the students, as they loved the challenge of working with a major high street retailer."

Anthony's dress will be featured in The Show: Fashion at the Royal College of Art on June 11. To book tickets, contact 020 7590 4566.

A presentation will be made to Anthony at a fashion show the following night.

His dress will initially be on sale at Miss Selfridge in Oxford Circus in London but then in the chain's ten largest stores, including Manchester city centre, the Trafford Centre and Liverpool.
