SOME Raikes Road, Skipton residents, are the latest to call for traffic calming measures to slow down speeding motorists on their street before someone is injured.

Jane Bouda said an incident a couple of weeks ago during which a car with a trailer hurtled down Raikes Road before colliding with a lamp post and a house wall had highlighted the need for something to be done urgently.

She said that at the bottom of Raikes Road there was only pavement on one side, so residents living on that side of the street had to step out into the road.

Raikes Road is supposed to be a 30mph zone in Skipton's conservation area. But Mrs Bouda said that cars leaving Skipton town centre along that route accelerated away too quickly. She said there was only one 30mph sign at the top of Raikes Road for motorists coming into town but no sign warning motorists leaving the area.

The residents are calling for officials from the highways department to visit the site to see if traffic calming measures could be put in place to cut speed.

Mrs Bouda said lots of work had been done elsewhere in town like Keighley Road and Gargrave Road, but as far as she knew there were no plans for Raikes Road.

Bill Isherwood from North Yorkshire Highways said Raikes Road had been included in the Skipton Traffic Management Scheme and was part of a scheduled programme for 2005-06.

He added that there had been quite a lot of requests for traffic calming in the Raikes and Rockwood areas and that residents would be included in a local consultation before any work was done.
