NEWLY elected mayor Coun Paul English met his public on Monday during the town's inaugural mayor making ceremony. Honorary Town Crier Kevin Griffiths attracted the public's attention on the town hall steps before a small crowd welcomed the mayor, his consort Coun Polly English and deputy mayor Coun Marcia Turner. Mr Griffiths led the party down the High Street where they greeted shoppers and market stall-holders along the way. Following the short walk the group went into the town hall annexe where tea and scones were laid out for invited guests including representatives from the police, local clergy, schools and local businesses. Coun English said: "The walkabout brought a smile to a lot of people's faces. Hopefully they will still be doing this in 100 years. It will become as traditional as the town crier."
