Woodhouse Grove School enjoyed success at the North of England Schools' LTA Championships at Bolton Grammar School and it was fitting that they received a trophy donated by a former master at the school.
Then Under-16s won the R L Bolt Trophy. Mr. Bolt was a long serving senior boarding house master and maths teacher at Woodhouse Grove School.
Sadly Mr Bolt recently passed away but everyone connected with the Grove and who were fortunate enough to have known him, will testify to how delighted he would have been to learn pupils from his former school lifted his trophy.
Three of the four pupils involved in the competition - Tom Laughton (U-19), Daniel Wise (U-16) and Iain Atkinson (U-16) - are LTA Scholars attending Woodhouse Grove School.
Along with Ben Murray-Potts (U-19) the boys were a credit to themselves, the LTA and the Grove through their high standard of play and a professional manner in which they conducted themselves on and off court.
Daniel Wise and Iain Atkinson were the Under-16 champions while Tom Laughton and Ben Murray-Potts made the semi-finals of the Under- 19 age group.
In the Under-16 event Daniel and Iain had a first round win over Ampleforth College by 10 games to nil. In the second round they beat Grange School 10-1. In the quarter-finals they had a two sets to love success over Durham Johnston School before repeating this scoreline to beat Cockermouth in the semi-finals.
This took them to a place in the finals where they beat Hymers College two sets to love.
In the Under 19s event Tom Laughton and Ben Murray-Potts had a first round win over Stoneyhurst College by 10 games to nil. This score was repeated with a second round success over Bolton School.
In the quarter-finals they defeated Winstanley College two sets to love and in the semi-finals lost to Altrincham HS 1 to .
