The Menston St Mary's U-14 ten-a-side rugby union squad secured a creditable third place in the inaugural Tarbutt Rugby Tournament established in honour of recently retired Prince Henry's teacher John Tarbutt.

The team, captained by centre Peter Turner, recorded two very encouraging wins against Prince Henry's B team (28-0) and Ilkley GS (7-0).

They then faced eventual trophy winners PHGS A team and narrowly lost 14-7 despite some tremendous efforts from Peter Turner, Stephen Wilson, Jason Moss, Liam Copsey and the rest of the team.

The last game of the competition, against Ashville College Harrogate, saw them without the injured Simon Brown. St Mary's conceded two quick tries and Peter Turner and Stephen Wilson were both injured.

Despite conceding 28 points to the eventual runners-up the team were lifted by a superb solo run of 80 metres by hooker, Jason Moss. With a great turn of speed, a chip ahead and clean catch Jason charged the last 20 metres with defenders hanging onto him before he grounded the ball for a try in the far corner of the pitch.

The effort so impressed the watching Prince Henry's former first team coach, John Tarbutt, that he awarded Jason the 'Best Try of the Competition' trophy.

The squad of Liam Wilton, Jason Moss, Ben Wilkinson, Anthony Valentine, Liam Copsey, Scott Etherington, Josh McNiece, Peter Turner, Stephen Wilson, Tom Wilkinson, Jim Ljustina, Nick Rushfirth, Simon Brown and Paul Howes performed really well in their first outing of the season..
