ILKLEY: The Ladies' Section held the annual 36-hole Sowden Trophy Competition in blustery but thankfully dry conditions. The winner, with scores of 80 and 71, was Karen French, runner-up was Judy Sherwin.

The Ladies' Section saw a good entry for a Prize Day kindly given by Mrs V Fell and Mrs G Bean. The competition was the best nett score over six hidden holes.

The winner in the Silver Division was Sally Ognall with 26 points (after a count back on the last two holes); 2, Liz Webster with 26 points (after a count back on the last three holes); 3, Pam Blackburn, 26 points.

The winner in the Bronze Division was Judy Palmer with 23 points; 2, Maggie Mitchell with 24 points; 3, Ann R Wood with 25 points.

The River Cup Final was held in conjunction with the May Medal and the winner was Linda Burton with a score of 75. Runner-up was Dottie Cartwright, 80.

The results of the May Medal are as follows: Silver Division - Gale Austin, 89-17-72; Pat Wright, 88-15-83. Bronze Division - Jean Schofield, 99-27-72; Jane Cooper, 105-29-76.

BEN RHYDDING: A modified American Greensome was played. Results: 1, B Robinson, A Nichols, 39 points; 2, J Allister, G Stone, 38.

A four-ball, better-ball stableford was held on March 30. Results: 1, J L Yeadon, A Halliday, 45 points on last nine, from 2, A Leverton, G Hardaker, 45 on last nine, from 3, Tim Lockwood, B Owens, 45.

Quota Competition. Division One - 1, B Fowler, 16; 2, A Nichols, 14; 3, B Owens, 12. Division Two - 1, B Robinson, 17; 2, B Ackroyd, 16; 3, G Lynass, 13.

The first Mixed Competition of the season was played in fine weather. The format, a Texas Scramble. Results: 1, D Firth, P Gill, K Towler, Mrs P Harling, 50-1; 2, D Allister, A Brook, A Parker, Mrs S Firth, 52-2; 3, B Owens, B Rockett, R Shackleton, Mrs J Carpenter, 53-6.

The second Mixed Competition was a Waltz Stableford. Results: 1, J R Hartley, I Clark, Mrs B Watts, 88 points; 2, T Rockett, D Allister, Mrs L Smith, 82; 3, B Owens, J Allister, Mrs P Harling, 81.

COOKRIDGE HALL: This week's full handicap individual stableford attracted 34 competitors. There were three finishers with 37 points but Tony Vickers took third place, virtue of the best back nine.

In second place with 39 points was Alan Murray, who was left to rue a two shot putting penalty on the 15th. Top of the leader board was Alan Higgs who compiled 40 points.

Clubhouse talk afterwards was that Alan, who was second a fortnight ago, may have peaked too early as the Club Seniors Mixed Open isn't until July 17.

Otley: The ladies once again combined two competitions by playing the qualifying stage of the Curlew Shield with an extra medal. The eight best gross scores in the handicap range of 21-28 qualify for the knock-out stage of the Curlew. The qualifiers were: E Binns, C Button, P Pick, S Thomson, M Bottomley, S Beanland, I Harrison and K Hill. The Medal results were:

Division One - B Jamieson 77-6-71; B Cowling 92-19-73. Division Two - E Binns 92-22-70; C Button 93-22-71. Division Three - J Hurren 112-40-72; J Lavers 103-30-73.

John Blears, Andrew Driver, Andrew Dufton and Chris Longthorne represented Otley at the Yorkshire Union Sixth Division Team Championship. This was played at Kirkbymoorside and despite some tricky conditions the team gained promotion and will now contest the Fifth Division Championship at Pontefract on June 4.

Following hot on the heels of the previous week's Waite Cup qualifiers, this week saw the qualifying round of the Victory Cup, the second major competition of the season.

The usual protagonists were among the 32 competitors who qualified for the match play stages. Paul Ridyard, vice-captain, shot a nett 66 while Chris Longthorne once again carded the lowest gross with a 69.
