Vandals who terrorise visitors to parks and other areas of greenery are being shot by park rangers - with hi-tech video equipment.

Two ParksWatch Rangers on motorcycles have started patrolling parks and public green spaces in Otley, Aireborough and Horsforth.

The one-year pilot scheme has been funded by the Community Involvement Teams (CIT) of Otley, Aireborough and Horsforth and is managed by Leeds Learning and Leisure Department's Parks and Countryside Service.

The officers aim to build good relationships with parkgoers, clampdown on anti-social behaviour and create a more harmonious atmosphere in the parks.

Denise Preston, senior assistant director for Leeds Learning and Leisure Department, said: "The residents of North Leeds requested a safer leisure environment and a reduction in crime within the area's recreational pockets.

"We are responding to their concerns and dealing with the problem in an effective and efficient way. I am sure the community will welcome this service very much. The patrols will go a long way to improving the quality of life in the locality."

Patrols are operating seven days a week between 10am and 10pm in and around Horsforth Hall Park, Golden Acre Park, Otley Chevin Forrest Park, Wharfe Meadows Park, Nunroyd Park, Holt Park and all other green areas.

Anyone who witnesses anti-social behaviour is asked to report the incident to the Patrol Services' 24-hour hotline on (0113) 232 9973.

Or they can call the police on 0845 6060606.
