Alan Combe today admitted: I wish I had joined City a year ago.
The Bantams head the chase for the Dundee United keeper when his contract runs out next month.
Other clubs are interested but City hope the sway of their long-time interest in Combe could be the key factor.
Combe was a huge hit during a loan spell at Valley Parade and is flattered that City have remained on his trail.
Speaking exclusively to the Telegraph & Argus, he said: "I can't say that Bradford is where I'm going to be next season because I don't know myself. But it's fantastic that they are still interested in me. With all that's happened I've been thinking that I would love to go there. I wish it had happened sooner but the club's financial position wasn't great although that seems to be sorted out now.
"My agent says there has been interest from other clubs but I certainly enjoyed my time with Bradford. It's a pity I couldn't have gone there a year ago."
Combe has forced his way back into the Dundee United side under Ian McCall and the one-time City winger had hinted he might try to persuade the keeper to stay on. Combe met the manager ahead of Saturday's final game of the season against Aberdeen but remains keen to look elsewhere.
Two new goalkeepers are top of Nicky Law's shopping list after Aidan Davison and Gary Walsh were released. An allocation of the wage bill has already been set aside.
Chairman Gordon Gibb said: "It's not the right diplomatic time to be discussing possible offers as Alan is still a contracted Dundee United player. But when he ceases to be, I'm sure there are plenty of mutually beneficial areas that we will be discussing."
l Andy Gray is hoping for the Scotland nod in tonight's friendly against New Zealand at Tynecastle.
