Keep out of Bradford - that's the stark warning being sent out to shoplifters.
A radio link has been launched to ensure there is no way out for thieves targeting city-centre stores. And traders are being urged to take part in the scheme.
It will ensure retailers are given up-to-the-minute information about criminals' activities. The three-way system is linked to closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera operators and the police to keep tabs on offenders' movements.
Funded by the City Centre Beat (CCB), a partnership between Bradford South Police, Bradford Council and retailers, the system costs traders £5 a year.
Member PC Mick Warbuton said the advantages of the scheme were innumerable. "This initiative provides an instantaneous and constant link between Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) who are out on the street, police officers, store security staff and CCTV operators," he said.
"If someone acts suspiciously in a shop, security staff will give out their details on the radio as a warning to other stores to be on their guard."
PC Warburton said CCTV operators will spot individual and PCSOs will keep a look out for them.
"If you commit a crime in Bradford city centre expect to find yourself on tape or in custody," he said. Kirkgate Shopping Centre security manager and CCB chairman, Mirko Maric, said the system was a vital tool in the fight against crime.
Clothing store TDF assistant manager, Paula Delahunty, a CCB member, said: "If someone acting suspiciously is heading our way we're ready for them."
l CCB meets on the second Tuesday of the month, at 10am, at Bradford Central Police Station. For details telephone (01274) 376439.
