City are eyeing out-of-favour Norwich striker Chris Llewellyn.
Sources in East Anglia claim the 23-year-old Welsh international is on Nicky Law's summer hit-list.
But City face competition from Llewellyn's home-town club Swansea, who have already opened talks.
While Norwich are heading the chase for Claus Jorgensen, the Bantams hope the lure of regular First Division football may persuade the Welshman to travel the other way.
Llewellyn met Swansea's director of football Brian Flynn last week and was said to be impressed with their offer. But a move to City would allow him to continue at the same level of football.
The biggest stumbling block could be wages. Llewellyn wouldprobably have to take a drop in pay to fit in with City guidelines.
Llewellyn made his debut in January 1998 after working his way through the ranks at Carrow Road. In the same year he made substitute appearances for Wales against Malta and Tunisia.
He has played 158 games for the Canaries and scored 18 goals, the last against Gillingham in April 2001.
After losing his place following a foot injury, he has hardly featured and appeared in only six games last season.
Llewellyn was loaned to Bristol Rovers for the last three months of the campaign and was a regular in their successful fight against dropping out of the Football League. He hit three goals in 14 games.
Norwich are prepared to let him go for free as manager Nigel Worthington freshens up his resources following the failure to reach the play-offs. Jorgensen is one of a number of names being considered.
City are believed to have watched Llewellyn several times although Law has drawn up a lengthy list of potential recruits.
Chairman Gordon Gibb said: "This is where the insider knowledge comes in and the graft of our football department getting about the country and analysing players to find those appropriate to this club."
Alan Combe is City's No 1 target as they concentrate on filling the goalkeeping void. Chelsea midfielder Robert Wolleaston is expected to sign shortly while talks have begun with Manchester United defender Lee Roche although Swindon are also interested.
