Stuart McCall, the oldest swinger in the First Division, has been told to keep on playing.

The City legend turns 39 next month but has been offered a new one-year contract by Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock.

McCall joined the Blades last summer after being released from Valley Parade and took up a combined coaching and playing role.

And after featuring in 46 games of their marathon season, including the second half of Monday's play-off final loss to Wolves, McCall has been invited to stretch his career into a 22nd campaign.

Warnock has been amazed by McCall's staying power and he said: "There is a 12-month offer on the table and we will be having a chat about it over the summer."

McCall, who jointly runs Sheffield United's reserve side, is 14 away from 800 senior matches and City fans will not be surprised if he decides to delay hanging up his boots for one more year.

Supporters Trust chairman Chris Hawkridge said: "It just proves if you are a dedicated professional how long you can keep going. Maybe it was a little unfortunate that he couldn't finish at the top level.

"If circumstances had been different financially I've no doubt he would still be performing for us but I'm sure he will get another warm welcome at Valley Parade.

"Hopefully, though, there will be a slightly different result next season. It was noticeable when they won

5-0 here how different Stuart's reaction was to that of the other Sheffield United players when the third, fourth and fifth goals went in."

McCall admitted: "I could never imagine that things would have gone so well for me. The plan was to put me in for the odd game and then leave me out but the manager has wanted me to play most of the time."
