In a hard-hitting sermon, the Very Rev. Brandon Jackson, Provost of Bradford, said that the race problems of today were an opportunity for all Christians to work towards understanding and a harmonious, multi-racial society. Speaking at Bradford Cathedral, he said racism was the unwillingness of one man to accept another because of the colour of his skin or his country of origin.

Two out of every ten boys and more than three out of every ten girls who left schools in the main textile centres of Yorkshire at the end of the Easter term went to work in wool textiles. Figures issued by the Ministry of Labour show that while the number of school leavers was nearly the same as a year ago, more than 30 per cent more school leavers in the textile areas decided to work in the Yorkshire textile industries.
