One man died and two passengers were seriously injured after a two-car smash in Bradford last night.

The driver of a Suzuki Vitara, thought to have been 18 years old, was killed after his car was involved in a collision with a blue BMW on Canal Road at 11.10pm.

The front seat passenger of the Suzuki was taken to hospital where he was said to be "stable" today.

Firefighters had to cut open the BMW to enable ambulance staff to get access to the rear seat female passenger, who was also taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary.

An eyewitness, who rushed to help the injured at the junction of Canal Road and Bolton Lane, said: "The cars collided and the Suzuki jumped up into the air, spun 180 degrees and then landed on the road facing the other way.

"We pulled up and ran over straight away. I called an ambulance and an off-duty policeman rushed over to help.

"The woman in the back of the BMW seemed pretty injured."

Firefighters from Shipley, Rawdon and Illingworth attended the crash.

Leading firefighter David Rawlinson said: "We made both vehicles safe and the man who died was already out of the vehicle.

"There was a female casualty in the rear of the BMW and we helped to extricate her by removing the door and side so the ambulance crew could get a long board in to help get her out."

Canal Road was closed for a considerable time while the road was cleared.

Police today appealed for any witnesses to the crash to contact Eccleshill Police Station help desk on (01274) 376059.
