A group of walkers from Keighley have conquered their health problems by scaling new heights.

Sixteen people from different parts of the WALK project met together for their most ambitious expedition yet - climbing Ingleborough.

And not even rain and mist could deter the group of people with physical and mental health problems.

The WALK project - run by Airedale Primary Care Trust's public health team - aims to get people of all ages rambling.

WALK co-ordinator Lorna Palmer says: "One particular walker who experienced massive health problems two years ago inspired the expedition.

"He began on the health walk, which is ideal for people with serious health problems, then as he got fitter and recovered more he began to walk with the Friday group which meets at the Russell Street Project.

"He'd always wanted to do Ingleborough and so the expedition was planned.

"This is not a typical health walk at all because they are designed to be suitable for people with health problems and are usually fairly flat and not too strenuous.

"WALK has now been around for long enough that we do have people who have been through the regular health walks and now want to do a bit more.

"This walk was a huge adventure and a huge achievement. It is a day that no-one who took part will forget in a hurry. We all got soaked, cold and tired but the sense of satisfaction on top was wonderful."

The WALK group is already planning to tackle another of the Three Peaks, Whernside.

Organisers have also thanked fell runners Rob Palmer and John Wootton for their help with the route, Keighley Community Transport and Speak's for their contribution of equipment. Anyone wanting to know more about the health walks should contact the public health team on 01535 667613.
