A team of children from Lees Primary School planted a good impression when they made a presentation to teachers from across West Yorkshire.

The group of year five pupils were invited to present a workshop on their Plantmania project at Syngenta, Huddersfield.

The presentation was given at the annual event for SETPOINT, which is an organisation set up to promote science, engineering, technology and mathematics in schools. Two months ago the year five class was given a pot of money to come up with a business project on a science theme. The children, who made the decision themselves, opted for a plant-growing exercise.

They have made hanging baskets and pots to put the seeds in, and they have overseen the growing of plants and herbs.

The pupils also made posters of their work, which they used in their presentation.

Year five teacher Liz Hustwick said: "The children led the workshop and they were really excellent.

"The benefits to the children are untold and varied. Overall it has been an excellent venture."

The project was also run as part of the primary and secondary links programme with Oakbank School, with science teacher Dave Walker joining the pupils at the SETPOINT event. The children have also been selling the final produce of their work to raise money for the school. So far, from sales to parents, the local community and even delegates at Huddersfield, they have raised more than £160.
