Thousands of pounds of donations have helped a community transport charity to replace a vehicle damaged by fire.

Last November, two minibuses, valued at £25,000, were torched outside Keighley Community Transport premises.

But this week, with money from the insurance and nearly £5,000 of local donations, the charity unveiled a new vehicle.

Transport organiser Stephen Shorten said: "We are extremely grateful for all the donations we received. We have a long list of donations as well as several anonymous ones.

"And quite a few volunteers have also given up their expenses to help buy the new vehicle."

He added: "There are some wonderful stories, for example, Braithwaite School made lots of Christmas cards to raise money and a motorcycle club which became users of the vehicles donated £120 as soon as they joined.

"Most of the people who have come up with money are users but the overall support has been fantastic."

The new Renault Kangoo will join the KCT's fleet of 11 vehicles used to transport people who cannot ordinarily get around.

The new vehicle, which is similar to a people carrier, has five seats and is specially adapted for wheelchair access.

It has a low and user-friendly access ramp and space for wheelchair users.

The minibuses are used by many local groups, including those serving children, the elderly and disabled people.
