Ilkley decorator Graham Tales won the Blue Bar Trophy two-day trial staged by the Richmond club at Wensley riding an old but immaculate Bultaco machine.
He beat younger brother Andy who finished eighth overall. Over 125 riders contest the annual event, some more interested in the social Yorkshire Dales evening than riding old British bikes in hot sultry weather. Skipton motor engineer John Maxfield took the Unit class from Mick Grant. Sixtyseven year-old Peter Gaunt, formerly from Horsforth, rode the experimental fourstroke Scorpa machine that made its British debut in the Scottish Six Days in the hand of Bingley importer Martin Crosswaite.
Gaunt finished third in the over 50s age group. Best of the ladies was Kathryn Wardle.
Londoner Keith Munns fell between sections and damaged a shoulder which then entailed a visit to the Friarage Hospital at Northallerton where he suffered a heart attack while being anaesthetised. Keith was reported to be recovering on Sunday night.
Harewood Hill Climb
Jim Thomson, the late head of Guyson Engineering at Otley, injected enthusiasm into any Harewood hillclimb, and his trophy is up for grabs on Sunday.
The entry list for Sunday sees Morgans, by the dozen, Caterhams by the barrow load, Honda Civic Type Rs, Subaru Impreza Clio Sports, Porsche, then a clutch of Pre-1984 Formula Fords.
Local names on the huge list include Menston's Sarah Cordingley sharing a Caterham with father Dale; Otley's Jonathon Medley, sharing a car with Simon Medley, and Ilkley's Adrian Martin in a Caterham 7.
James Dabill and national sidecar trials ace Robin Luscombe set the standards on Saturday afternoon at Emmott's Farm at Silsden where Yeadon-Guiseley Motor Club staged their third closed to club championship trial.
Seventeen year-old Dabill cleared the entire trials course with penalty, probably a legacy of an intense ACU Training School weekend, or a sharpening up for next Sunday's British championship event in South Wales.
Challengers were Andrew Carter and James Noble.
The Club will run another of their popular 'Beginners Trials' at Norwood next Saturday afternoon over a course appropriate for newcomers to off-road events.
Dabill doubled up on his Saturday victory by winning the Bradford Motor Club's Yorkshire championship trial at Howden Wood, Silsden, on Sunday beating Skipton's Aran Drachenberg and Guiseley youth Edward McIntosh.
