Guiseley skipper Mark Ross hammered a blistering unbeaten 159 as his side helped re-write the Airedale and Wharfedale League record books at North Leeds on Saturday.

A match aggregate 675 runs set a new record comfortably beating the previous best of 600 set by Steeton and North Leeds four years ago.

It was the first time in the league's 67 year history that both sides in a game have passed the 300 mark.

Guiseley batting first made 350-6 off their 50 overs with the superb effort from Ross being supported by Howard Reeve (81) and Australian Chris Underwood (40).

North Leeds looked all set to pass this mammoth score when their fourth wicket pair Steve Wales (122) and Nigel Baker (82) shared a stand of 122 but they eventually finished on 325-8 to take two points from a drawn game.

Ross was somewhat overshadowed by fellow opener Graeme Wolfenden when the former Otley man had scored 20 out of the 32 on the board when he was bowled by Roy.

Ross however quickly got into his stride and he and Underwood added 51 for the second wicket.

This was nothing compared with what was to come from Ross and former Undercliffe player Reeve. This pair hammered the ball to all parts of the Old Park Road ground in a third wicket stand of 171.

It was a glorious day for batsmen and one Guiseley wicketkeeper Steve Thompson would be ruing as he kicked his heels on the sidelines after being banned by the club for seven weeks following his misdemeanours over the Bank Holiday.

The League Management Committee will now review the situation following the club imposing its own ban.

The four points see Guiseley remain in third place three points behind Bilton who are a further seven points adrift of high flying Menston.

There seems to be no stopping David Lester's men and they crushed Otley on Saturday dismissing them for 140. The wickets were shared out for Menston with Jason Scott picking up 3-35, Michael Bredenkamp 2-29 and Grant Bell 2-31 with one apiece for Richard Taylor and Martin Knowles.

With opener Gary Thompson continuing his excellent form with an unbeaten 72 victory was a mere formality and it came in 47.3 overs with Scott Johnson causing a late flutter with his 3-40 but Richard Taylor was there with 42 to forge victory.

Steeton slipped to the bottom of the table although they did get two points from a drawn game with Collingham.

Chasing 226-9 Steeton finished 20 runs short after fine knocks from Andrew Dalby (60 no) and Gary Boulton (43).

Green Lane moved off the bottom after skipper Garfield Williams produced an excellent century in a drawn game at Adel.

He was well supported by Barry McCormick with 52 and Steve Hargreaves with 44. Lane finished on 278-7 and Adel replied with 184-9.

Hall Park took just one point from their drawn game with Beckwithshaw. Batting first Beckwithshaw amassed 254-7 with openers Ben Quick (68) and Rob Wilkins (65) sharing a stand of 128. Robert Murphy picked up 4-97 and Robert Hodson 3-77.

Park then replied with 164 for eight after losing opener Peter Kempton without scoring. S Wilson (68) and Michael Elliott (42) put on 76 for the second wicket but some poor batting followed with four more players failing to score.

Follifoot were dismissed for 134 as Steven Phillips took four for 33 off a splendid 17 overs. Only Chris Newton with 46 and Paul Angove with 30 showed real resistance.

With Phillips continuing an excellent all-round performance with an opening knock of 62 Bilton coasted to victory in 31 overs with seven wickets in hand.
