A FORMER teacher who has worked tirelessly for the town of Barnoldswick has been honoured for her efforts.

Dorothy Carthy, who lives in Kelbrook, is this year's recipient of the Rosebowl Award, given annually by the town council to someone who contributes to the local community.

Presenting the trophy, former town council chairman Maureen Blackwell said that she could not think of a nicer or better person to receive it.

" Your qualities go before you," she said. "You have worked hard for the town, done more than most and you deserve this honour."

Mrs Carthy was born and bred in Barnoldswick and has been an active member of many societies, including the town council and the history society.

She was a founder member of both, and is a former chairman of the town council. She has been secretary for the history society for the past 25 years.

Mrs Carthy said: " You feel lots of things for the place where you live. I don't think there's any better way to serve the place than being part of what happens there."

County Councillor David Whipp added: "When Dorothy stood down as a town councillor she wrote a letter to me which outlined some of the things we ought to be doing. Two of the things were the town crier and a clock for the millennium.

"While Dorothy has been away from the town council we have achieved both of those things.

"The ideas and the fulfilment of them encapsulates what Dorothy's attitude has been, with an eye to the past and an eye to the future," he said.

However Mrs Carthy was modest about her achievements. "Those two things were good for Barnoldswick, not all my ideas were that good. I am very pleased you were able to implement them."

Other councillors paid tribute with Coun Mary Norcross saying Mrs Carthy was the member they would never forget.
