Motorists have been urged to avoid Odsal roundabout while essential maintenance work is carried out during June.

From tonight, the roundabout and adjoining roads will be closed for three successive weekends for resurfacing and for strengthening two bridges over the A641 Huddersfield Road.

Part of the Manchester Road guided busway will also be closed during the work, which is part of the £20 million South Bradford Integrated Transport Scheme.

Bradford Council has sent letters to residents saying disruption is inevitable, but they will minimise it as much as possible.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council's executive member for the environment, said: "We apologise for the inconvenience but this roundabout has been in constant use for 30 years and this vital repair and maintenance work cannot be done without closing some roads. To minimise disruption to residents, schools and commuter traffic the work will be carried out at weekends."

The roundabout will be closed each weekend up to, and including, Monday, June 23, from 7pm on Friday until 4.30am the following Monday. During these times, Rooley Avenue, Halifax Road, Cleckheaton Road, Odsal Road and the slip roads from Huddersfield Road onto the roundabout will be closed to through traffic, but Huddersfield Road will remain open during the work.

Diversions will be in place from the Staygate M606 roundabout for ring road and motorway traffic and from the junction of Halifax Road and St Paul's Avenue for traffic travelling towards Bradford.

Netherlands Avenue will be closed except for buses and residential traffic between its junctions with the A6303, Halifax Road, and Huddersfield Road. Traffic travelling towards the Odsal Roundabout along Cleckheaton Road will be diverted via Common Road and up part of Netherlands Avenue, onto the Huddersfield Road.

The repair work will stop temporarily on Saturday, June 21, from 3pm to 9pm, to allow traffic to get to and from Odsal Stadium for the Bradford Bulls game against Wigan Warriors.

Local bus services to Manchester Road, Huddersfield Road, Odsal roundabout, Odsal Road, Rooley Avenue, Halifax Road and Cleckheaton Road will also be affected. Call MetroLine daily from 8am to 8pm on 0113 2457676.
