Representatives of the armed services and voluntary organisations attended the civic service and parade to mark the election of the new Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Arthur Trigg. Bradford Cathedral was packed with councillors and council officials, as well as the Lord Mayor, Lady Mayoress, the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Mrs Joan Lightband, and her husband, and the three assistant Lord Mayors.

Hot smuts from industrial chimneys which spoil clothes and mark the bodywork of cars are causing some of the residents in Carr Lane, Windhill, Shipley to consider removing. "Seven days a week we have to bear this nuisance," a resident of Carr Lane told a Telegraph & Argus reporter. "If we cannot do anything about it then we shall have to think about removing."
