National Bike Week is being celebrated in Kirklees with a number of events aimed at cyclists of all levels.

Among the events will be a public meeting to give cyclists a say in the future of cycling in Kirklees, held at Cleckheaton Town Hall from 7.30pm to 9pm on Monday.

All cyclists are welcome to discuss a range of cycling issues and agenda items are invited. Contact Lynnette Evans, Kirklees Cycling Off-icer, Kirklees Environment and Transportation Service, on (01484) 225611. All cycles can be safely stored in Cleckheaton Town Hall during the meeting.

The following events are taking place in North Kirklees during Bike Week:

Saturday, June 14, to Sunday, June 22: Ikea in Birstall will provide a free meal to any customer arriving at the store by bike during restaurant opening hours. Go to the main reception desk for a voucher for the restaurant.

Sunday, June 15: Meet the Spen Valley Greenway Rangers at 10.30am in Cleckheaton Tesco car park for an easy bike ride down the Greenway to Heckmondwike arriving at The Railway Inn at midday. All welcome.

Monday, June 16: Free bike safety checks at IKEA from 10am to 3pm. Qualified cycle mechanic on hand to check bikes and offer advice on anything cycling.

Also, short leisurely ride on Spen Valley Greenway to view some of the sculptures as part of the new 'Art and The Travelling Landscape' installation. Meet at Cleckheaton Tesco car park at 6.30pm for three-quarter-hour ride before the Kirklees Cycling Public Meeting in Cleckheaton Town Hall.

Sunday, June 22: Free safer cycle training at IKEA. A two-hour session suitable for adults and children to learn good bike-handling skills away from traffic. To book a place, sign up in-store. Times will be arranged subject to demand. You must provide your own bike and helmet.

Kirkwood Hospice sponsored ride on the Spen Valley Greenway. A four-and-a-half-mile bike ride, walk or jog on this attractive, traffic-free cycle route to raise funds for the Heckmondwike & District support group of Kirkwood Hospice.
