The organisers of Haworth in Bloom are urging potential sponsors and volunteers to pitch in to help the village entry blossom.

Haworth's entry in the Yorkshire in Bloom contest was judged seventh out of 14 in the Spring category, but with more help the village could improve.

Mike Hutchinson said: "In the Spring section we came seventh, which is pretty good for our second year.

"And in their report the judges said we were one to watch for in the future."

Now they have been notified of the Summer judging date, the team members want more people to dig in. And they hope sponsors will come forward to help the village pick up more points.

Mr Hutchinson added: "All the other places have big committees that do all the planning.

"But at the moment we only have three or four of us to do everything.

"And we want businesses to come forward to offer their help.

"We have been told we would get extra points if we had sponsorship. It does not necessarily have to be a Haworth business.

"We would also like any business to help if they can with our tombola."

Mr Hutchinson said a recent tombola, run by himself and young helper Anthony Davids, raised £285 for the funds.

He added the team had many ideas in the pipeline, which could include an oriental garden in the park. They were also trying to find an old wooden boat to use as a planter for the park's entrance.

The village's entry was started by the traders' association, who paid for the entry and flowers. Since then, the entry has been funded by the community chest.

Steve Thorpe, Haworth gardener with Bradford Council, has made 26 hanging baskets for the competition with Haworth Primary School's gardening club.

He said: "We are doing all sorts of projects this summer as well as putting planters around the village."

The club, which has been running for three years, was highlighted by the judges, who will return on July 15.

Mr Hutchinson added: "We will be putting out flowers for the village, but hopefully people can also help with their own.

"And there is no point putting out the flowers if no-one is going to water them, so we hope someone with time to help could do that."

He is also appealing for someone with carpentry skills to come forward to help with some woodworking projects. Mr Hutchinson can be contacted on 01535 645992.
