Scouts had their camping and cooking skills put to the test at the weekend.

Three teams from troops in the Keighley district took part in an annual competition, this year staged at a field in Cross Hills.

The six-strong teams pitched their own tents and were awarded points for their management of the site, and they cooked all their own meals using gas stoves. They were judged on a range of culinary skills, including the planning and presentation of the meals.

Ian Neale, the assistant district commissioner for Scouts, said: "The standards were very good, and there was little to choose points-wise between the two top teams. It was a totally new experience for some of the Scouts -- two of them had just transferred from Cubs -- and they did very well." The Palmer Trophy, for the winners of the cooking contest, went to 23rd Keighley (St Anne's). The camping competition was won by 14th Keighley (Haworth), and the David Exley 'Spirit of the Event' Trophy was awarded to 19th Keighley (Ingrow).

Mr Neale thanked members of the Network -- the Scouting section for 18 to 25-year-olds -- who helped out at the event.
