THE diggers are poised to move in on Ilkley's East Holmes Field ready to create what is hoped to be one of the best skate parks in the area.

After years of plans, ideas, and an intensive six months of fundraising, Ilkley charity Pipedream has proudly announced it will start work on the skate park within days.

Pipedream chairman Keith McGregor said: "After a huge amount of years trying to get this thing done, the Ilkley skate park has now been ordered. A lot of people in Ilkley thought we would never do it, and at times, we thought we thought we'd never do it."

He says the design commissioned is for state-of-the-art facilities, which he believes may be better than any other local skate parks, and even larger skate parks in Leeds.

"This is the most wonderful facility that could out-rival all the others in the local area. If the kids could see the specifications, they'd be so happy," said Mr McGregor.

He is confident the skate park will be completed in time for the school summer holidays as promised, and hopes to organise an official launch day for the park including rock bands and special guests.

The latest design for the skate park, which will stand on a riverside spot next to Ilkley Rugby Club off New Brook Street, includes a number of specially-built obstacles for skateboarders and in-line skaters.

Young skaters and skateboarders in Addingham may also be able to begin their summer holidays with new facilities. Work is about to begin on flattening and putting down a safe surface on a site behind the Memorial Hall car park, Main Street.

Addingham Parish Council chairman, Gordon Campbell, said: "The idea is that it will all be ready in time for the beginning of the summer holidays."

It is hoped that the skate area - including obstacles fitted by the skaters - will be finished in time for Addingham Gala on July 12.
