A charity weekend on Bingley's £48 million relief road has been postponed - because of peat.
The event, initially planned for July 26 and 27, will now be held on September 6 and 7 because the whole of the two-mile route will not be asphalted in time.
Amec, the contractor building the road from Crossflatts to the Ramada Jarvis Bankfield Hotel at Cottingley Bar, has discovered a larger amount of peat than expected at Treacle Cock Alley which has delayed its surfacing.
Amec project manager Charly Clark said the peat was removed from a section of the alley and the area was filled with suitable materials.
The charity weekend organisers, the Rotary Clubs of Bingley and Bingley Airedale, and Bingley town centre manager David Dinsey, asked to rearrange the date to ensure the public still have the one-off chance to walk the length of the road before it opens to traffic.
The event will celebrate the building of the road before its official opening in the autumn.
A number of attractions are planned involving transport from vintage vehicles to hot-air balloon rides. Buses from Keighley Bus Museum and the shire horses from Bradford Industrial Museum will be taking fare-paying passengers along the road.
"We asked Amec if we could change the day so people would be able to go right along the road," said Mr Dinsey. "Also, it's probably a better time as it's just before the schools go back, so more people might be able to come."
A large number of charities have been invited to put up stalls.
And Bingley Harriers has organised a 10km run, sponsored by the Telegraph & Argus, which will be followed by a one-mile fun run.
Mr Clark said: "We are extremely proud to be able to support such an event which will enable money to be put into community charities.
"We hope the community, for the first time, will take up this exciting opportunity to gain public access to the Bingley relief road in its entirety as it is the community whom we would like to thank for their continued support and tolerance throughout this major project."
