Farsley Celtic chairman Andy Firbank has sprung to the defence of his club, rubbishing reports that the club is in turmoil.

The club postbag has been bulging since Celtic advertised the manager's job after the departure of Martin Haresign.

So many candidates have put themselves forward that Firbank and his fellow board members have struggled to narrow them down.

"We are surprised and delighted at the level of applicants who have come forward," said Firbank.

"There have been large numbers of high profile people that have shown an interest in the position. That makes our job even harder because every time we get down to a short list that we are working through in terms of arranging interviews another pile of letters arrive."

With changes due regarding the structure of the non-league pyramid, the coming season is one of utmost importance. Clubs need to have the infrastructure in place - and match that with a league placing of prominence - if they are to benefit.

The Celts could be seconded into the UniBond Premier with a top-half finish this term in Division One if plans to create a Conference North come to fruition.

The board at Throstle Nest are mindful of that scenario but also want to act with speed to ensure the new manager has time to begin the pre-season schedule. They are hoping to make an announcement by next Wednesday or Thursday.

"Martin only left last Friday but the response has been amazing and has surprised us all," said Firbank.

"On a daily basis we are dealing with applications and that has not helped us to formulate a short list. We have averaged ten per day, and the interest has been from near and far - from good quality people, UEFA coaches at many levels. We are not going to mention names at this stage because they are with other clubs.

"I think this is a big club with big potential and there are others out there who share my view. We are moving on and there is no doubt we will get the right man."

One name still in the frame is current assistant John Deacey. He refused to rule himself out of the running after Haresign's exit and Firbank has intimated he could remain at The Nest.

"John is still in place and we will consider his application along with all the other candidates," said Firbank. "It could be that he works as assistant along with a new boss or takes charge himself. It would provide continuity for all concerned but we won't be making a decision until early or the middle of next week."
