It was hard not to feel sorry for Undercliffe's Jaffer Nazir on Saturday night.

He had taken season's best top-flight figures of eight for 54 in the Specialist Ducting Supplies Bradford League, but still his side could only manage a losing draw at home to Idle.

After bagging the crucial early wickets of Mark Gilliver and Ijaz Ahmed, the Pakistani returned in a devastating second spell to take six further wickets.

Idle, who lost the toss but were going to bat anyway, were a handy 111 for two thanks to the grafting Mick Stevenson and the more fluent Mohammed Suluman before Nazir got his radar spot-on.

Suluman (34) and Steve Lawrence went in the same over when the score was 111 and Stevenson (47), Chris Thompson and Mark Nicklin were despatched in a Nazir triple-wicket maiden at 128.

Visions of an all-ten feat came strongly into view when Nazir bowled Nicky Heinemann in the 34th over, but Greg Lambert spoiled that by dismissing big-hitting Ian Dewhirst late on.

A target of 177 didn't seem to present second-placed Undercliffe with that many problems and they coasted to 39 without loss before the controversial dismissal of Chris Taylor changed the course of the match. The Yorkshire player was convinced his edge had bounced before reaching wicketkeeper Paul Eachus, but after that it was game on.

An accurate spell of leg-spin bowling by Lawrence, a disciplined pace bowling display from young Thompson and Ahmed's ability to move the ball at a lively pace meant Undercliffe could never settle and only dropped catches prevented Idle from winning. Nicklin and Ahmed spilled chances off successive balls to let Richard Elphee and Nazir off the hook, and heinemann spilled a dolly from Elphee, who was eventually out off the last ball as third-from-bottom idle took an unlikely four points.

Pudsey Congs extended their lead to seven points with a routine seven-wicket victory over Gomersal.

Ian Purcell (56) and a wagging tail helped Gomersal to 188 for seven after they had been 86 for five, but Paul Carroll (107 not out) carried his bat as Congs won by seven wickets, figuring in stands of 69 with Andy Bethel and an unbroken 77 with barbar Butt.

Cleckheaton climbed to third with an even more emphatic eight-wicket home triumph against farsley, for whom no-one made over 30 in their 170.

Iftikhar Ahmed (5-26) and James Stansfield (3-22) shone with the ball for the winners, Andrew Gale (87) and Chris Siddall (47 not out) doing likewise with the bat as the target was reached in just 34.5 overs.

Baildon paid the penalty for not batting out their overs at east Bierley in the Priestley Cup replay dress rehearsal. They made 244 after an opening stand of 135 between Paul Spragg (94) and Philip Slater (51), but crucially gave their opponents five overs. Bierley won after 52.1 overs, Richard Gould (92 not out) carrying his bat, fellow opener Jonathan Proud (48) helping him add 82.

Spen Victoria had two of the day's key performers in Rao Anjum (101) and John Wood (7-34) as they won by 105 runs after dismissing Pudsey St Lawrence for 103.
