Council tenants in Rendel Street, off Bowling Back Lane, Bradford, are plagued by rats, no matter what the council or the public health officials try to do to get rid of them. Health officers, or Bradford Metro Council officials, have gone to the street, put poison down or smoke-tested drains. Each time the rats have stayed away for a few weeks, then returned.

Bobby, a 15-year-old bay horse, who for ten years has pulled a greengrocer's cart round the Little Horton district of Bradford, has been purchased by Our Dumb Friends' League and the Blue Cross to save him from slaughter. He will go into semi-retirement on a farm in Wrose. Bobby belonged to a 72-year-old Southfield Lane greengrocer who retired recently.
