Tributes were today paid to a Shipley mother-of-one killed in a road accident near Scarborough.
Gail Hartley, of West Royd Avenue, died when an articulated lorry hit the parked BMW she was travelling in on the A64 at the village of Ganton.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and four other people were taken to Scarborough Hospital with serious injuries. One man was still in intensive care today.
The accident happened at about 3.30am on Sunday.
The car was parked on the eastbound carriageway when it was hit from behind by the lorry. The impact ripped the roof off the BMW and catapulted Gail out in the road. She died at the scene. The lorry driver was uninjured.
Firefighters described the accident as horrific.
A spokesman said: "The roof was completely off and the car had been hit badly from behind. It was a nasty accident."
Gail's nine-year-old daughter Sinead was today being comforted by her grandmother.
Councillor Mark Blackburn who lives in West Royd and is chair of governors at Windhill Primary School where Sinead is a pupil, said the community was shocked by what had happened.
He said: "Everyone at the school is feeling for Sinead. This is devastating for the family and the neighbours are all upset too. Gail was a popular, well-known person."
The other injured people were Mark Clavin, 39, of West Royd Close, Jodi Lee Halliday, 22, of Wood End Crescent, and Andrew Fielden, 20, of West Royd Avenue. They were later discharged but Michael Lane, 32, of West Royd Road, was still in hospital where his condition was described yesterday as "stable."
An inquest into Gail's death was due to be opened and adjourned today.
