There were ghostly goings-on at the Alhambra Theatre - but they didn't spook Rosema Nawaz.

The six-year-old from Keighley is one of the cast of The Ghost Lesson being performed for schoolchildren as part of Bradford Festival week.

It is a story about children and the ghosts can only be seen by the youngsters in the audience.

Rosema's mum Shanaz Gulzar, 31, a former Greenhead High School pupil, is the designer and associate director of the show, which tries to help children cope with differences.

Shanaz said: "The ghosts are very friendly - a bit mad. One is crazy about Thomas the Tank Engine and the children love it.

"Humour is a great way of communicating.

"Children are more able to cope with different cultures. "They are better equipped because they still have open minds."

The Elvis-obsessed caretaker also proves a hit - singing Suspicious Minds.

Shanaz, added: "Adults remember it from Elvis and the youngsters all know it from Gareth Gates. It's a hit all round."

And the production which runs until Saturday was a big hit during its premier yesterday.

Children from Crossflatts Primary were among the audience.

Amy Tulip, 11, said: "I laughed a lot and the lights and special effects were really good."

Hana Mohammed, 11, said: "It was better than TV because it was live. I thought it was really good."

And Stephen Boyes, ten, said: "It was good and funny."

Meanwhile in Centenary Square Adnan "Ash" Hussain was entertaining the crowds in the soaring lunchtime temperatures.

The 19-year-old hairstylist performed a routine of body popping and street dance for the crowds on the open-air stage in the summer sunshine.

The self-taught former Tong School pupil hopes to go to the Northern School of Dance.

He rates Justin Timberlake and Janet and Michael Jackson as his singer/dancer heroes.

"I would love to hit the big time," he said.

"When I have had more singing training I hope to try for one of the TV talent shows."

He works at the Blues Hair workshop in town and described his own choppy/coloured style as "wild".
