A children's gardening club has expanded to grow vegetables.

The gardening club, which runs after school at Haworth Primary School, has been at the forefront of Haworth in Bloom.

The club has expanded to grow vegetables for use within the village.

Steve Thorpe, Haworth gardener and founder of the club, said he came up with the idea to widen the interest and education of the club.

He said: "We have made all the flowers and tubs and I like to give the children something new all the time and keep them interested.

"The idea is to grow some vegetables and make some baskets to give out to the community. Hopefully, we can put some out for Haworth show."

He said the club was hoping to keep its produce within the community and was planning to sell raffle tickets to various groups in the village.

The club has grown a wide variety of vegetables and herbs including carrots, Brussels sprouts and beetroot, as well as tomatoes and cucumbers in the greenhouse.

Mr Thorpe added: "We have tried to grow a little bit of everything to teach them how to grow different vegetables.

"The children love it. They always look forward to something new."

Head teacher Pauline Anderson said it was an exciting addition to the children's education.

She said: "I think it is fantastic. They have achieved so much with the plants and this is something new. We have got enough land to expand, and this is another area for them to learn. They have been really brilliant and they are really excited about this new venture."

Although there were no plans to use the produce in school meals, Mrs Anderson said the vegetables could be used in the school's harvest festival.
