THERE was a feeling of real community spirit in Skipton at the weekend as local people pulled out all the stops to provide a gala procession.
Despite earlier concerns that there might not be a procession, many new faces ensured it was a musical and colourful spectacular.
The gala did not have its traditional gala queen because the organising committee was unable to find chaperones.
But concerned that Skipton might lose the tradition Belinda Riley stepped in at the last minute to ensure there was a 'queen for the day.'
In just five hours, she had organised a queen, attendants, clothes, vehicle and decorations. Jenna Smith, 12, acted as queen, attended by Demi-Lea Monaghan and Arron Wilson.
Mrs Riley was given a vehicle by Beresfords, which she quickly decorated with the help of Lorraine Bailey, and a driver from Phoenix Autos.
There will definitely be a competition to find a queen next year as Mrs Riley has promised to organise it herself.
She added that new people were already putting their names forward to be on the organising committee.
Following the parade the entertainment moved from Skipton High Street to Aireville Park where the Marsh Falconry team and its birds of prey team were ready to fly.
The official opening was conducted by staff and bands from Skipton's nightclub Bliss, but a mix-up meant that the Leeds City Pipe Band was pushed out of its slot and did not perform.
After the opening the crowds gathered around the main arena for the star attraction James Dylan's Stuntworld.
Its first display included daredevil stunts on motorbikes with performers jumping through fire and over each other from ramps, and a trick cyclist jumping over a box of dynamite.
During the second display the stuntmen put on a car show.
The sunshine attracted droves of visitors who enjoyed the popular fairground rides, clowns, games and stalls.
For the young there were traditional merry-go-round rides, bouncy castles and fun houses and for the older gala-goers some rides that were certainly not for the faint hearted.
The day culminated with a firework display sponsored by Marshall Waddington.
Town Mayor Coun Paul English said: "The sun shone and the people of Skipton and environs packed the High Street. It was a pleasure to see.
"It was good to see the crowds supporting the long established Skipton tradition and long may it continue.
