Following two recent second places, Tim Gill (Aire Valley Racing Team) moved up a gear and won the 35mile Janus RC 50th anniversary Road Race.

Staged over a flat five mile circuit near Holmes Chapel, the seven-lap race was run off at high speed. During the first five miles numerous attacks were unsuccessful with riders managing to force a gap of a few seconds only to be chased down by the hungry pack.

However, at the start of the second lap five riders broke away stretching their lead to around 20 seconds. Sensing the danger Gill attacked from the main bunch and bridged the gap on his own with a three mile effort. With the added contribution from Gill the leading riders increased their lead to 45 seconds over the next 15 miles.

With five miles to go the main field started to chase but the leaders had forced a big enough gap to fight out the victory on their own. In the final sprint for the line Gill timed his effort perfectly, crossing the line with two lengths to spare and saluted the large crowd.

Bernie Burns of Aire Valley Cycles was delighted with the team's fourth win of the year with the main team riders all performing well in the first half of the season.
