The centenary Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup isn't going to pass by quietly.

After the tie between Woodlands and East Bierley in the second round, there was an even more unlikely tie in the third round at Mirfield.

Division Two side Bankfoot had recovered from nine for four to make 172 for seven from their 50 overs and looked a shoe-in for the last four when they had the Division One side at 126 for nine.

However, No 11 Matthew Harrison (14 not out) then combined with skipper Dave Jackson (60) to add 46 for the final wicket before a fine catch off the last ball meant both sides have to try all over again at Bankfoot next Sunday.

"Neither side wanted to lose," said Mirfield chairman David Walker, "and the match was played in a very good spirit."

Neil Parkinson dismissed Michael Nicholson, overseas player Saleem Mughal (first ball) and Ian Nicholson in a superb opening spell, and a run out then added to Bankfoot's woes.

However, a combination of good batting and poor bowling meant opener Gary Wainwright (101 not out) and Craig Hunt (50) added 125 for the fifth wicket.

Mirfield's reply, Jackson apart, was notable for wickets falling steadily to catches from attacking shots, and they seemed down and out at 126 for nine after Andy Marshall had gone through the top order.

Walker said: "Young Matthew seems to need the extra responsbility of playing in the first team to bring the best out of him, and neither Dave nor himself looked in trouble.

"Then it was probably relief as much as anything that caused Dave to sky one off the last ball, but it still needed a very good catch by Mughal - he must have run 20 yards - to tie the match."

There was almost as much drama in the all-Division Two tie at Wagon Lane, Bradford and Bingley's Matthew Cockshott hitting the fourth ball of Richard Robinson's final over for six to give the hosts victory by two wickets.

Earlier Robinson (45) and Phil Carter (62) had given Brighouse a fine start with an opening stand of 70, Carter and Azar Chunara (18) adding 68 for the second wicket.

Robert Walker (2-14 off ten overs) and spinners Cockshott (4-26) and Adam Swallow (4-33) helped to put a brake on the visitors, however.

Bingley needed an eighth-wicket stand of 60 between overseas player Lance Shaw (38) and Matthew Cockshott (38 not out) to put themselves back in the match, three run outs having done Bingley's cause no good whatsoever.

The main question now is whether Bingley all-rounder Richard McCarthy, who defied knee cartilage problems to play, will be fit for the semi-finals on July 13. He was having an operation today.

The other two ties were much more straightforward, Idle defeating Spen Victoria by 43 runs at Spen Lane, and Woodlands thrashing East Bierley by 224 runs at South View Road.

Farsley, Hanging Heaton and Yeadon are through to the Priestley Shield semi-finals and will be joined by either Bradford and Bingley or Woodlands, who play at Wagon Lane next Sunday.
