World motorcycle trials champion Dougie Lampkin rounded off an eventful Andorra weekend by increasing his lead in the FIM World Trials Championship over Japanese team colleague Takahisa Fujinami.
On Saturday the Silsden rider scored a victory, and with it 20 points, but his father, 1975 world trials champion Martin, was hospitalised with a serious collarbone breakage after a crash on the trials route on the second of two laps.
Lampkin narrowly missed out on victory on Sunday.
Locked in a three-way battle with team-mates Freixa and Fujinami, Lampkin eventually lost the trial by virtue of having completed the event in a slower time than his Spanish rival.
All three Montesa-HRC riders finished on eight marks, and while Fujinami was instantly demoted to third place due to having two less cleans than the other two, there was nothing to separate Freixa and Lampkin except elapsed time,
"To have gained five points on Fujinami is a good weekend's work, especially considering the disruption caused by the loss of my father's services," said Lampkin.
"However, I am not happy that I have lost a world championship trial on time. This is not how an event of this status should be decided.
"We need some more difficult trials so the difference can be clear, otherwise it will be a series for the strongest nerves rather than the best rider."
Lampkin added: "The team has adapted well, and my cousin James has done a great job at filling my father's boots, as that is no mean feat.
"The results have been good, but two wins would have been better."
