This summer is the worst experienced by Shipley Glen funfair operators. Under shelter from torrential rain, Mr Paul Teale, who owns the amusement park on the Glen, said : "It's one of the worst holiday periods I can remember." Mr Teale, who is in partnership with his mother, has been on the Glen for 32 years. His father and uncle bought the park in 1945.

A potholing record was set by Geoffrey Workman, a 24-year-old Oldham radar tester, when he emerged from Gaping Ghyll pothole on the slopes of Ingleborough after being underground 14 days. When he returned to the surface through Bar Pot 9, he said his subterranean holiday had not been a stunt, but an experiment to see how the human body reacted to a prolonged stay underground.
